ERIN-”ISMS”

•September 13, 2008 • Leave a Comment

My little Erin is such a performer!  She has been since she was born.  She used to fake “cough” when she was only one month old.  She has always mimicked anything she sees, which most children do, however Erin does it to perfection.  Not only mimicking words & actions, but facial expressions & mannerisms as well.  So here is where I have decided to write down all of the funny things that she says & does!  I hope you get as much enjoyment out of it as I do!!

“Bob” (this was erin’s first word! which makes sense because I say “bobby” a lot & everyone else calls him “bob” however when it is a 4 month old going around saying “Bob” it seems hilarious!  She used roll around the house & point to things that were bobby’s & say “bob!” wow!  it that seems so young for a child to do that but she was amazing & did most things early.  She was rolling over from her back to stomach at only 3 days old! (seriously!!)

“I’m not Korean!! I’m a girl!!” (this is what she said when i first started trying to explain to her that she & I & Tre are Korean.

“Look! Mommy! The Koreans have a house! With a floor! Just like ours!” (Okay so we went to some friends house & before we went I was trying to tell erin that they are Korean like we are.  Well this is what she said when we walked in the front door!! I wanted to die!)

“Mommy! The Koreans keep running away from me!!” (this is what she stopped to tell me when she was playing with the little kids that were at the house in the aboved mentioned incident!! again i wanted to die!)

“Hi!” “That means “Hi!” in spanish!” This is what she told me one day out of the blue!  I tried to tell her she was wrong but she didn’t believe me!

“Mommy, me & you are brown & daddy & tre are white!” this is Erin’s new observation since it has been summer & we have gotten fairly tan, but daddy & tre have not!!  i think it’s cute, but bobby doesn’t.

I am going to premise this one with this.  Erin has a very vivid imagination that knows no boundaries.  So one day we were in wal-mart & Erin was in the cart.  She was pretending there were monsters lurking.  So there is this VERY Tall VERY muscular VERY handsome black guy walking towards us, & Erin looks at him & screams.  Like a very shrill scream & then points & says “Mommy it’s a scary monster!!” I wanted to floor to open up & swallow me!  Luckily the guy had a very good sense of humor & just started laughing!!

“I did it on purpose!” this is erin’s new answer to why did you do that.  since she used to always say it was an accident & i tried to explain to her that if she chooses to do it then it’s not an accident, but now she thinks it’s okay because she did it on purpose!

this is me fixing erin’s hair the other day…erin: “That hurts” me: sorry, but i have to pull it tight so that your bangs stay back because i don’t like them. erin: “you don’t”? me: “no, i don’t & you had better not cut your hair anymore!!” erin: “but mom, tre’s therapy girls like my bangs!” me: “groan!” ………….she had remembered from like 2 months ago when tre’s therapist told her she liked her bangs!

erin: “Mom?” “What are some things that are orange?” me: well…you tell me some things that are orange… erin: “well oranges are orange, & pumpkins are orange!” me: very good! erin: “mom? are orange umbrella’s orange?” me: yes… erin: “are orange cars orange?, & orange buildings orange? & “orange mailboxes orange?” (this goes on for about 10min!)

erin: “mom? when i was a little baby, did you name me an erin moon scott baby?”

erin: (looking at her baby pictures) “look mom that was me when i was an erin moon scott baby!”

erin: (she says this to tre’s bus everyday) “bye! thanks for bringing me my brother home!!”

me: “hey erin, tre’s invisible! see because he’s wearing camo!” erin: “mom…that’s not even funny!” me: hey i laugh at your jokes!! erin: “i laugh at your jokes too! but that’s not a joke because it’s not funny!!” : ( & yes she is only four years old!

this was a day when i had to pick erin up from school early. erin: “mom, i missed recess…” me: i’m sorry erin: “mom…what is recess anyway?” me: well thats when you go outside to play erin:”awwww……man!!!”

erin: mom, my eye hurts!!…i think there must be an eyeball in it!!”

This is Erin talking about the new baby.  Erin: “So if it’s a girl can she wear my clothe s when she’s big?” me: sure  Erin: “and if it’s a boy he can wear Tre’s clothes when he’s big?” me: sure  Erin: “and if it’s a Hello Kitty then it can wear Hello Kitty’s clothes?” me: ummm…..it’s not going to be a Hello Kitty.  Erin: “well it might be.”

These are a few commercials that Erin has been repeating lately…Just picture ordinary goings on and then these things popping out of her mouth at completely random times!

“Happy cows come from California!”

“It’s a bright idea from Discover Card!”

“It’s my money and I want it now!”

“Mommy, you and Daddy are the perfect pair for me!”

“Mommy you are always warm like a blanket!”

“Mommy last night I had a dream that I was square like spongebob & I don’t even like spongebob!!”

Me: Erin don’t walk on that with bare feet.  Erin: “I don’t have bear feet! I just have kid feet!”

Kai Mayleen is here!!

•October 14, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Well it has been a long time since I have blogged so there has been a lot that has happened.  Our precious daughter Kai Mayleen Scott was born on August 30, 2009.  She is beautiful and wonderful!  We are so blessed to have her.  It was a long hot summer until she arrived and now the weather has cooled and everyone is enjoying our new family.  Erin just adores her little sister and it is so cute to watch her with the baby.  Tre doesn’t interact much with sister yet but he laughs when she cries so he is off to being a tormenting older brother already.

I feel like I should have so much more to write about but my life is boring.  I am still in school, I will finish my associates next year.  It is nice to have that accomplishment coming so soon, but it still seems like a long time until I finish, especially since I will probably go on for my masters.

Erin is doing well.  She is funny as ever with a little sassy attitude!  I hate to say that it is cute because I am sure it won’t be once she is a couple years older but I do like that she is able to express her feelings.

Tre is back into PT after having a break while I was pregnant.  He is growing more and more everyday and I don’t know how I will lift him much longer.  He does seem to be improving ever so slightly and slowly.  It is so hard when we see family we haven’t seen in awhile.  The improvements are so slight, but I don’t think that everyone can quite grasp that he will not ever improve great lengths and that he will require constant care for the rest of his precious life.

Bobby is wonderful.  He is so sweet as a daddy.  I love him so much even though sometimes life gets in the way of showing him my appreciation.  It is so hard to ever have time for ourselves but I hope he knows that he is my rock and I do appreciate all he does for me.

A Flood of Emotions…

•January 14, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Please tell me that the pregnancy hormones haven’t already kicked in!  I am so ecstatic to announce our pregnancy!  but at the same time I am a mess of emotion.  Plus last weekend we had our family Christmas (late) and there is all the Christmas emotion lingering as well.  Missing my Papa at the holidays and loving my grandmother, yet wondering if we will have another Christmas with her.  Wondering if my baby will get to have at least one picture with her to cherish.  Seeing my sisters beautiful twins and feeling the tears come to my eyes when these little tiny babies make eye contact with me, and hold their heads up and reach out their hands to pull at my necklace, and wonder why my little Tre had to have such a tragedy.  Why? Why me? But at the same time being grateful that he is still with us.  And then wondering how I will ever get through a day with my new baby without mourning my last.  Yes Tre is still with us but he is not the baby I had, he is forever changed, and now will I ever be able to feel happiness without that twinge of sadness?

I have to get ahold of myself! I’ve cried every day since I saw those babies! Just remembering them looking into my eyes brings the flood of tears.  How will I ever make it?  I don’t want my baby to remember me crying all the time but how can I not be sad for my little boy?  And worried for my new baby too, I never thought tragedy would strike us as it did, but now I worry constantly over everything!  In my heart I know that everything will work out in God’s will but in my mind I cannot help but worry.  Surely these hormones are the cause of all this!  We are in such a good place, pregnant with our third.  Happy, our children are healthy with the exception of Tre’s CP.  I should be rejoicing not crying!

I pray God will give me the strength I will need to be the mother my children deserve.

Cafeteria Nazi…

•January 5, 2009 • Leave a Comment

Okay so this morning I take my daughter to school, the first day after winter break.  I always go in with her & help her get her breakfast, she’s only 4 so she still needs help.  Well usually the kids go in & sit wherever they want right.  So this morning there is this woman (she’s not even a teacher just a person who works at the school, not that it matters I guess) but anyway she is barking orders at the kids.  She’s telling them that they have to come in and sit in the tables front to back and fill up the chairs, so they don’t get to pick where they sit or sit with their friends.  And then when the kids are sitting there eating she is telling them that they can’t talk just eat & get out.  And as the cafeteria fills up it’s kinda hard for the kids to tell where they are supposed to sit, because they are trying to find a seat, while this woman is barking at them to just sit here where there’s an empty chair.  And this one boy walks by and she tells him to sit, but he doesn’t he keeps walking, so she grabs his arm and is all like “I told you to sit here and you’re gonna listen to me!” as she is pulling him back to the seat she wanted him in!  I am looking around at the other adults in the room a few parents also helping their young children and they are all looking down like they’re afraid she will start barking orders at them too.  And a few teachers whom always work cafeteria duty and at first they are kinda like “what the heck” until she barks at them that if they make the students sit and eat then breakfast will go much smoother.  Now just let me say that I have been helping my daughter get her breakfast the entire year and I really don’t feel that the cafeteria is in that much of an uproar that we need a cafeteria nazi.  I mean sure there are kids talking and laughing and sometimes it’s hard to find a seat if you get in there late but hey that’s kinda the whole school experience right?  I mean when you’re in elementary school your socializing pretty much revolves around breakfast, lunch and the playground.  I mean what’s the harm in letting the kids sit with their friends and talk??

I’m Pregnant!!!

Our New President Barack Obama!!

•November 7, 2008 • 1 Comment

I would just like to start out with CONGRATULATIONS! TO OUR NEW PRESIDENT ELECT BARACK OBAMA!!!

I will say that this is just the third time i have been able to vote in a presidential election but it is the first time i have been truly happy with whom I casted my vote.  Not all will agree in fact I am sure that there are a lot of people whom probably are reading this & did not cast their vote for Barack Obama.  & I have kinda steered clear of blogging on this particular subject because I am truly not sure how to approach it.  But there is definately something that I want to say.  Which is that I completely understand if you do not agree with Obama’s politics.  That is your right & is understandable.  However, if you are like my mother & did not cast your vote for Obama because you think he is some anti-american muslim then I would have to say shame on you!  If you don’t agree with his politics that’s one thing but if you honestly believe that he is some radical muslim whom is trying to take over america from the inside out then SHAME, SHAME!! At least do your homework!! He is NOT muslim people!!!  Even if he went to a muslim school, he should only be considered cultured.  Not to mention the fact that few muslims are radicals that want to harm americans or anyone.  & if you don’t know that then you are a sad victim of todays propaganda, which tries to portray all muslims in the same light.  If you are christian I totally understand that however I do not understand the disrespect that some have for any other religion than their own.

But it is really sad to me that people but especially my mother should be so racist.  Even though she says she’s not she is.  Her latest line is great, “I don’t have a problem with them (African Americans) it’s them who seem to have a problem with me.”  “Look at those one’s in Oklahoma suing the state for reparations for the riots, why should we have to pay them, so they can sit around & not work?!”  To which my response (in my head because i cannot even get into that argument with her is) that first of all, of course you have a problem with them!! you can’t come in contact with a black person without somehow commenting on something that they did & how it is related to them being black!! (& it’s not just black people, because racism is color blind you know, it’s hispanics, muslims, canadians & even asians! that’s right i said asians, & yes i realize that i am asian & my mom is racist against me, even though she will say she is not) & besides why shouldn’t they get reparations, i mean they were wronged in a severe way & if we pay out to indians for their misfortunes & things we did to them then why shouldn’t we pay out to african american???????!!!!!! & for her to say that “america isn’t even going to be america anymore” i can’t even express my anger & sadness in this.  I mean really people/mom how is Obama any different than I??? I am not white & I cannot even run for presidency because I was not born in America but if I could would I be some “sleeper cell” trying to take over America from the inside out? I mean really how is it different? Obama was mostly raised by his white american grandparents, yes he spent time in Indonesia, but so did I!!!!

I just hope that at the end of his presidency that people can say wow, I was really wrong about him, he was a truly honest & great president who has made history & helped bring America through rough times.  But will those kind of people ever be able to say anything good about him? I just wish people like my mother would at least come out & say they are racist, I mean really it would be much easier for me if she would just admit to what she is rather than hide behind some sort of visad.  I mean really she can’t even come into contact with someone without somehow commenting on their race.  But now that I think about it it’s not just race I mean if they are “white” then it’s always something too, like they are “slow” or something….it’s just so annoying!!

ANYWAY!! sorry I got off on my rant but I did want to say that I completely support Obama & am truly happy that he won.  I agree with his politics but it is also a great & historic moment for americans.  & yes I did say that I agree with his politics, & YES I AM A CHRISTIAN!! & I am not sorry that I support him.  You may say that it isn’t right because “innocent blood is at stake” & yes I am referring to abortions, but what I have to say about that is that one, even if abortions were illegal they would still happen.  & two that just because I personally do not believe in abortions it  is not my place to tell ANYONE else what they can & cannot do with their bodies.  It is not my right to put into place laws that are based on my religious or moral affiliation.  & call it socialism if you want but I don’t believe that higher taxes for the rich is socialist.  I mean really people they are still going to have plenty of money!! It’s not like you are taking everything everyone makes & putting it into a community pot, I mean please, they are still wealthy!! & at the end of the day hungry children get fed, & housed & educated.  yes I understand that there are those who find ways to live off the system & take advantage but what  I don’t think that a lot of people understand is that MOST people that get any kind of public assistance WORK!! oh yea, that’s right people they work!! they work 40hours a week &  a lot work more & guess what they still don’t make enough to pay rent & keep the lights on & feed their kids, so guess what they are humbled into asking for help, so that they can keep a roof over their kids heads & food in their bellies.

so anyway this has become a huge rant of my opinion about politics & probably a lot of people may not like it, & maybe even a lot of people will feel uncomfortable talking to me after reading this, but guess what people??? I AM STILL THE SAME KARA YOU KNOW!!  that’s right, I am still that girl next door who does everything she can to take care of her kids the best way she knows how.  I am still the girl who will be there for you anytime you need me.  I am still that girl who can make you laugh at some unexpected time.  I am still that girl who you knew in high school, or you worked with.  I am still the same.

CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR PRESIDENT ELECT BARACK OBAMA!!

i hope that you serve the people in all the ways you said you would, that you fight for main street, & remember family values, & that you represent everyone equally.

THANKYOU FOOD DETECTIVES!!!!!!!

okay so i don’t know if you have seen this show where they uncover myth vs. truth about food & related things.

i have only caught a couple of episodes but thank goodness i cought the one about getting gum out of hair!!

because i let erin chew gum today, she has been for awhile & has done so well!  but i should have known better when i saw her take it out of her mouth & i just told her to put it back in & dont take it out again! (& wash her hands! lol!) BIG MISTAKE!! next thing i know its in her hair & all the way up by the scalp!! & it there was a lot of hair caught! so i remembered that the only thing that worked on food detectives was cooking oil! so yay! it only took a couple of minutes & it was out!!

but i will still think twice about giving gum again! but it was better than having to cut it out!!

God is the only one whom can save you…

as an adoptee, & a generally confused person i have always looked for answers in my life.  what if my parents had kept me, would i still have this void in my life, & so on.  but what i have found in my years is that no matter what has happened in your life, no matter where you come from or whom you are, God is the only one whom can save you.  God is the only one whom can take away your pain, He is the only one that can fill that void in your life.  So many people go through life with the what if’s & why not’s but if you just give it up to God, He can heal you.  I have no idea how, but you can just have a better outlook on life with God in your heart.

Even in my life where i feel that so many people “over use” God.  Where every other word is Jesus this & God that, it’s not that i don’t believe because trust me i do, it’s just that i feel that we overuse God in these demeaning ways, when He is so much more.  We pray that God will get us to work in time, or save us from a bad decision.  God will only help those whom help themselves people!  I mean really, we don’t have to saturate our lives with God to know that He is there & cares for us!  I just think that a lot of people overuse, “God” & “prayer”.  Not that i don’t believe but that i don’t think that God cares if the line in walmart is too long * you’ll be late for your nail appointment!!.   can we just get back to God for whom He really is?  Our Lord & Savior Jesus Christ, whom forgives your sins & loves you unconditionally.  Not that guy we pray to when we are late or get in a jam.

I guess I just want people to know that I do love God & pray & have my faith but I also don’t think that believing in God takes away all personal resposibility in my life.  & i don’t think that having God in my life means that i in any way need to be fake or overbearing in my faith.  I am who I am & God loves me for that & only that, for my humility in saying God is the only God in my life & i am humbled before Him.  Not because I feel the need to mention His name every other word or quote scripture in the Starbucks line.

mccain vs. obama who supports children with diasabilities?

•October 27, 2008 • Leave a Comment

BARACK OBAMA VS.  JOHN MCCAIN:

Who  Will  Break  Down  the  Barriers  that  Exclude  People  with  Disabilities?

OBAMA ON SUPPORT FOR LIVING INDEPENDENTLY IN THE COMMUNITY

Obama  is  a  co‐sponsor  of  the  Community  Choice  Act  of  2007. Obama  believes  that  individuals  should  be  able  to  make  their  own  choices  for  their  living  arrangements  and  live  independently in  their  communities.   [S.799, 110th Congress]

Obama  is  a  co‐sponsor  of  the  Community  Living  Assistance  Services  and  Support  (CLASS)  Act  Of  2007.   This  bill  would  help  individuals  with  functional  impairments  pay  for  services  that  they  need  to  maximize  their  independence.   [S.1758, 110th Congress]

MCCAIN ON SUPPORT FOR LIVING INDEPENDENTLY IN THE COMMUNITY

McCain strongly opposes the Community Choice Act. Asked  about  the  Community  Choice  Act  at  a  Town  Hall  in  Denver,  McCain  said  ”The  Community  Choice  Act  is  not  a  piece  of  legislation  that  I  support.”  [McCain Town Hall, 7/7/08]

OBAMA ON EDUCATION FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

Barack  Obama  supports  full  funding  of  the  Individuals  with  Disabilities  Education  Act  (IDEA),  early  intervention  and  developmental  programs,  and  expanded  college  opportunities  for  students  with  disabilities.

Obama  voted  for  over  $44  billion  in  funding  for  the  IDEA. [SCR 1, Senate Vote #94, 3/22/07]

Obama  will  invest  $10  billion  per  year  in  early  intervention,  educational  and  developmental  programs  for  children  between  zero  and  five. His  plan  will  help  expand  programs  such  as  Early  Head  Start  to  serve  more  children  with  disabilities.   His  plan  also  will  encourage  states  to  expand  programs  for  children  with  disabilities,  such  as  IDEA  Part  C.  [Obama Plan to Empower Americans with Disabilities]

Obama supports increasing opportunities for college students with disabilities.   He also will provide more support for these college students. Obama  was  an  original  co‐sponsor  of  the  Senate  bill  to  reauthorize  the  Higher  Education  Act  (S.  1642)  which  significantly  expands  opportunities  and  supports  for  individuals  with  disabilities  to  attend  college  and  graduate  programs.   [S.1642, 110th Congress]

MCCAIN ON EDUCATION FOR INDIVIDUALS WITH DISABILITIES

John  McCain  has  repeatedly  voted  against  the  IDEA  even  though  he  claims  he  supports  full  funding  of  it.

McCain has repeatedly voted against funding for special education.

McCain repeatedly voted against funding increases for the IDEA. [H.R.4577,  Senate  Vote  #170,  6/30/00;  SCR  23,  Senate  Vote  #103,  3/26/03]

McCain  has  chosen  tax  cuts  for  the  wealthy  over  education  funding  for  students  with  disabilities. Specifically, McCain  voted  against  increasing  spending  in  the  amount  of  $229  billion  over  10  years  for  the  IDEA.   McCain  also  voted  against  an  amendment  that  would  create  a  reserve  fund  of  $73  billion  in  IDEA  funding.   The  spending  would  have  been  made  possible  by  reducing  tax  cuts.   [SCR  23,  Senate  Vote  #103,  3/26/03;  SCR  23,  Senate  Vote  #70,  3/21/03]

McCain  did  not  co‐sponsor  reauthorization  of  the  Higher  Education  Act  (S.  1642). He  also  did  not  vote  on  passage  of  the  reauthorization  of  the  Higher  Education  Act  in  the  110th Congress.  [S.1642, 110th Congress; S.  1642, Senate Vote #275, 7/24/07]

OBAMA ON SOCIAL SERVICES SPENDING

Obama  opposes  a  freeze  on  social  services  spending  for  people  with  disabilities.

Obama  voted  against  capping  non‐defense  spending  which  means  that  social  service  spending  for  people  with  disabilities  could  continue  to  meet  their  needs. In  2005,  Obama  voted  against  the  Inhofe  amendment  that  would  cap  non‐defense,  non‐trust  fund  spending.  [S.1932, Senate Vote #286, 11/3/05]

MCCAIN ON SOCIAL SERVICES SPENDING

McCain  promises  that  he  will  cap  non‐defense  spending  for  at  least  one  year,  meaning  that  social  services  spending  for  people  with  disabilities  will  be  capped  as  well.

McCain voted in favor of capping non‐defense spending. In  2005,  McCain  voted  for  the  Inhofe  amendment  that  would  cap  non‐defense  and  non‐trust  fund  spending.  [S.1932, Senate Vote #286, 11/3/05]

McCain  proposed  a  freeze  of  discretionary  spending as  illustrated  when  he said, “As  president,  I  will  also  order  a  prompt  and  thorough  review  of  the  budgets  of  every  federal  program,  department,  and  agency.  While  that  top‐to‐bottom  review  is  underway,  we  will  institute  a  one‐year  pause  in  discretionary  spending  increases  with  the  necessary  exemption  of  military  spending  and  veterans’  benefits.”  [McCain Remarks on the Economy at Carnegie Mellon University, 4/15/08]

OBAMA ON HEALTH CARE FOR AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES

Obama  will  sign  universal  health  care  into  law  by  the  end  of  his  first  term  in  office,  and  he  has  supported  expanding  the  State  Children’s  Health  Insurance  Program  (“SCHIP”)  and  health  care  programs  for  people  with  disabilities,  children,  and  veterans.

Under  Obama’s  plan  to  provide  universal  health  insurance,  insurance  companies  will  not  be  able  to  stop  individuals  from  getting  coverage  even  if  they  have  pre‐existing  conditions  and  disabilities. Obama’s  plan  allows  individuals  and  businesses  to  purchase  public  or  private  health  coverage  through  a  national  health  insurance  exchange.   Obama’s  plan  would  make  health  care  more  affordable  and  accessible  to  all  Americans,  particularly  individuals  who  have  been  denied  coverage  in  the  private  market  due  to  a  pre‐existing  condition  or  disability.  [Obama Plan to Empower Individuals with Disabilities]

Obama  is  a  co‐sponsor  of  ending  the  Medicare  Waiting  Period  Act  of  2007  (S.2102). Before  they  can  get  Medicare  coverage,  people  with  disabilities  must  first  receive  Social  Security  Disability  Insurance  (SSDI)  for  24  months.   Due  to  the  24‐month  Medicare  waiting  period,  an  estimated  400,000  Americans  with  disabilities  are  uninsured  and  many  more  are  underinsured  at  a  time  in  their  lives  when  thy  need  health  coverage  the  most.   During  this  waiting  period,  many  individuals  develop  secondary  conditions,  their  health  status  worsens  and  many  die.   Obama  supports  legislation  that  would  phase  out  this  harmful  waiting  period  and  provide  individuals  with  health  insurance.  [S.2102, 110th Congress]

Obama supported expanded health insurance for children. In  2007,  Obama  voted  to  reauthorize  the  SCHIP  at  over  $60  billion  for  five  years.   Two  children  who  live  with  a  single  parent  who  makes  $51,510  would  have  access  to  health  insurance  coverage  under  SCHIP.   The  bill  would  provide  $100  million  in  new  grants  to  fund  state  outreach  and  enrollment  efforts  and  allocate  $49  million  for  a  demonstration  project  to  streamline  the  enrollment  process  for  low‐income  children  already  eligible  for  coverage.   [HR 976, Senate Vote #307, 8/2/07]

Obama  supported  assuring  accessible  health  care  to  people  with  disabilities  by  co‐sponsoring  the  Promoting  Wellness  for  Individuals  with  Disabilities  Act  (S.1050) The  bill  would  require  the  U.S.  Access  Board  to  establish  access  standards  for  all  diagnostic  equipment  (examination  tables,  x‐ray,  mammography  and  other  radiological  equipment,  etc.).   It  also  educates  physicians  and  dentists  by  requiring  that  medical  schools,  dental  schools,  and  their  residency  programs  provide  training  to  improve  competency  and  clinical  skills  in  providing  care  to  patients  with  disabilities  (including  those  with  intellectual  disabilities)  as  a  condition  of  receiving  federal  funds.   Finally,  it  establishes  a  national  wellness  grant  program  which  will  authorize  funding  for  programs  or  activities  for  smoking  cessation  weight  control,  nutrition  or  fitness  that  are  tailored  to  the  needs  of  individuals  with  disabilities  and  authorize  funding  for  preventive  health  screening  programs  for  individuals  with  disabilities  to  reduce  the  incidence  of  secondary  conditions.   [S.1050, 110th Congress]

Obama supported expanding health care for veterans.

In  2005,  Obama  voted  for  providing  an  additional  $500  million  per  year  for  the  next  five  years  for  mental  health  services  for  veterans. [S.2020, Senate Vote #343, 11/17/05]

In  2006,  Obama  voted  in  favor  of  adding  $430  million  for  outpatient  and  inpatient  health  care  and  treatment  for  veterans. Nearly  half  of  the  military  servicemen  and  women  serving  in  Iraq  and  Afghanistan  will  require  health  care  services  for  the  physical  and  psychological  traumas  of  war,  yet  the  Bush  administration  and  Republican‐led  Congress  have  underfunded  the  Veterans  Administration’s  medical  services  by  at  least  $1.2  billion  for  2007  alone.   And,  this  was  the  second  consecutive  year  they  had  done  so.   [H.R.4939,  Senate  Vote  #98,  4/26/06;  The  Independent  Budget,  A  Budget  for  Veterans  by  Veterans,  2/10/06;  Newsweek,  1/19/06]

Obama  voted  to  grant  access  to  Medicaid  for  Hurricane  Katrina  victims  for  up  to  five  months. The  bill  would  have  provided  full  federal  funding  for  Medicaid  in  Louisiana,  Mississippi  and  Alabama  for  up  to  one  year  and  provided  $800  million  to  help  people  who  were  caring  for  Katrina  evacuees.   [S.1932, Senate Vote #285, 11/3/05]

Obama  voted  for  $2  million  for  research  of  traumatic  brain  injuries to improve  imaging  for  traumatic  brain  injury  testing  and  adapting  current  technologies  to  treat  brain  injuries  suffered  in  war.   [H.R.5631, S.  Amendt.  4781, Senate Vote #222, 8/2/06; CQ, 8/2/06]

MCCAIN ON HEALTH CARE FOR AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES

McCain’s  health  care  plan  does  not  prohibit  discrimination  against  individuals  with  pre‐existing  conditions  and  disabilities. McCain’s  healthcare  plan  would  replace  the  existing  tax  exclusion  for  employer‐sponsored  health  coverage  with  a  refundable  tax  credit  for  all  Americans  as  an  incentive  to  purchase  health  insurance.   However,  many  individuals  with  disabilities  are  denied  coverage  or  unable  to  afford  coverage  in  the  private  market  due  to  pre‐existing  conditions  and  disabilities.   While  McCain’s  plan  would  work  with  states  to  develop  best  practice  models  in  expanding  coverage  to  individuals  who  have  been denied  coverage,  it  would  not  prohibit  discrimination.  [Washington Post, 4/30/08]

McCain  opposed  reauthorizing  SCHIP  and  providing  insurance  for  millions  of  uninsured  children. According  to  Knight  Ridder,  ”The  [2007]  Senate  proposal  would  provide  coverage  to  3.2  million”  uninsured  children  and  renew  coverage  for  the  6  million  children  already  covered  by  the  program.   The legislation passed 68‐31.  [H.R.  976, Vote #307, 8/2/07; Knight Ridder, 8/2/07]

McCain  voted  against  $2  million  of  funding  for  research  of  traumatic  brain  injuries. McCain  rejected  legislation  that  would  help  improve  imaging  for  traumatic  brain  injury  testing  and  adapting  current  technologies  to  treat  brain  injuries  suffered  in  war.   [H.R.5631, S.  Amdt.  4781, Senate Vote #222, 8/2/06; CQ, 8/2/06]

McCain opposed expanding health care for veterans.

In  2005,  McCain  voted  against  providing  an  additional  $500  million  per  year  for  the  next  five  years  for  mental  health  services  for  veterans. [S.2020, Senate Vote #343, 11/17/05]

In  2006,  McCain  was  one  of  13  senators  who  voted  against  adding  $430  million  for  outpatient  and  inpatient  health  care  and  treatment  for  veterans. Amendment passed 84‐16.   [H.R.4939, Vote #98, 4/26/06]

McCain  has  not  co‐sponsored  the  Promoting  Wellness  for  Individuals  with  Disabilities  Act  (S.1050)

OBAMA ON CIVIL RIGHTS FOR AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES

Obama  strongly  supports  the  Americans  with  Disabilities  Act  (ADA)  Restoration  Act.   Indeed,  he  signed  on  as  an  original  co‐sponsor  of  the  Senate  version  of  the  ADA  Restoration  Act. [S.1050, 110th Congress]

Obama  will  appoint  judges  who  exhibit  empathy  for  individuals  with  disabilities. “Barack   Obama  will  appoint  judges  and  justices  who  respect  Congress’  role  as  a  co‐equal,  democratically  elected  branch  of  government  and  who  exhibit  empathy  with  what  it  means  to  be  an  American  with  a  disability”  [Obama  Plan  To  Empower  Individuals  With  Disabilities]

MCCAIN ON CIVIL RIGHTS FOR AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES

While  McCain  has  also  co‐sponsored  the  ADA  Restoration  Act,  he  has  promised  to  appoint  judges  like  those  who  interpreted  the  ADA  narrowly  and  deprived  millions  of  people  with  disabilities  of  their  civil  rights. McCain  said  that  as  president,  he  would  ”appoint  strict  constructionist  judges.”   [AP, 8/7/07]   ”In  an  address  at  Wake  Forest  University,  McCain  pledged  to  nominate  jurists  who  believe  ‘there  are  clear  limits  to  the  scope  of  judicial  power’…By  way  of  example,  McCain  said  he  would  look  for  people  in  the  cast  of  Chief  Justice  John  G.  Roberts Jr.  And Justice Samuel A.  Alito  Jr.,  and  his  friend  the  late  Chief  Justice  William  H.  Rehnquist.  He  called  them  ‘jurists  of  the  highest  caliber  who  know  their  own  minds,  and  know  the  law,  and  know  the  difference.’”  [Los Angeles Times, 5/7/08]

OBAMA ON MEDICARE ELIGIBILITY

In  2007,  Obama  voted  against  increasing  Medicare  Part  D  premiums  for  beneficiaries  making  over  $80,000  annually.    Obama  voted  against  the  Ensign  Amendment  that  would  require  Medicare  prescription  drugs  beneficiaries  with  annual  incomes  over  $80,000  and  couples  with  annual  incomes  over  $160,000  to  pay  a  larger  share  of  their  Medicare  Part  D  premium.[SCR  21,  Senate  Vote  #93,  3/22/07]

Obama opposed means testing for Medicare.   In  response  to  a  NCPSSM  questionnaire,  Obama  said,  ”The  bill  added  ‘means  testing’  to  Part  B  of  Medicare,  requiring  individuals  with  incomes  over  $80,000  to  pay  gradually  higher  premiums.  This  undermines  the  basic  premise  of  Medicare  as  an  insurance  program  for  all  Americans  and  could  cause  wealthier  and  healthiest  people  to  leave  the  Medicare  program.”   [NCPSSM Questionnaire; Citizen Action Illinois Questionnaire, SEIU Questionnaire]

MCCAIN ON MEDICARE ELIGIBILITY

McCain  voted  to  raise  the  Medicare  eligibility  age  from  65  to  67. In  1997,  McCain  voted  in  favor  of  raising  the  eligibility  age  for  receiving  Medicare  from  65  to  67  with  the  change  being  phased  in  between  2003  and  2027.  The motion passed 62‐38.  [S 947, Vote #112, 6/24/97]

OBAMA ON MENTAL HEALTH PARITY

Obama  is  a  long‐time  supporter  of  mental  health  parity  legislation,  having  passed  the  Illinois  Mental  Health  Parity  Law.   He  also  co‐sponsored  the  Mental  Health  Parity  Act  of  2007. Obama  co‐sponsored  a  bill  to  amend  the  Employee  Retirement  Income  Security  Act  (ERISA)  and  the  Public  Health  Service  Act  to  require  a  group  health  plan  that  provides  both  medical  and  surgical  benefits  and  mental  health  benefits  to  ensure  that:  (1)  the  financial  requirements  applicable  to  such  mental  health  benefits  are  no  more  restrictive  than  those  of  substantially  all  medical  and  surgical  benefits  covered  by  the  plan,  including  deductibles  and  copayments;  and  (2)  the  treatment  limitations  applicable  to  such  mental  health  benefits  are  no  more  restrictive  than  those  applied  to  substantial  all  medical  and  surgical  benefits  covered  by  the  plan,  including  limits  on  the  frequency  of  treatments  or  similar  limits  on  the  scope  or  duration  of  treatment.  The  bill  prohibited  the  plan  from  establishing  separate  cost  sharing  requirements  that  are  applicable  only  with  respect  to  mental  health  benefits.  [110th, S.558, Introduced 2/12/07; HELP Report, 4/11/07]

Obama  co‐sponsored  and  voted  for  a  mental  health  parity  bill  that  requires  coverage  for  serious  mental  illnesses  to  be  provided  on  the  same  terms  and  conditions  as  other  illnesses  and  diseases. [92nd  GA;  SB  1341;  2001;  Signed  into  law  7/27/01,  PA  92‐0185]

MCCAIN ON MENTAL HEALTH PARITY

McCain’s  health  care  plan  would  eliminate  the  mental  health  parity  requirements  in  45  states. OBAMA ON AUTISM

Obama  will  increase  federal  funding  for  outreach  and  support  services  for  people  on  the  autism  spectrum. Specifically,  ”Obama  will  seek  to  increase  federal  ASD  funding  for  research,  treatment,  screenings,  public  awareness,  and  support  services  to  $1  billion  annually  by  the  end  of  his  first  term  in  office.   Obama  will  also  continue  to  work  with  parents,  physicians,  providers,  researchers,  and  schools  to  create  opportunities  and  effective  solutions  for  people  with  ASD.”  [Obama Plan Supporting Americans with Autism Spectrum Disorders]

Obama  is  a  co‐sponsor  of  the  Expanding  the  Promise  to  Individuals  with  Autism  Act  (S.937)  which  would  improve  services  and  supports  for  individuals  with  autism  spectrum  disorder  and  their  families. It  would  build  upon  programs  within  the  Developmental  Disabilities  Act  to  increase  interdisciplinary  training  of  professional,  development  and  dissemination  of  evidence‐based  autism  treatments,  interventions,  supports  and  services  for  children  and  adults,  and  protection  and  advocacy.   [S.937, 110th Congress]

MCCAIN ON AUTISM

McCain  has  not  taken  a  leading  role  to  expand  services  and  supports  for  people  with  autism. McCain  has  not  co‐sponsored  the  Expanding  the  Promise  to  Individuals  with  Autism  Act  (S.937).  [S.937, 110th Congress]

McCain says he will work to advance federal autism research. “As  President,  John  McCain  will  work  to  advance  federal  research  into  autism,  promote  early  screening,  and  identify  better  treatment  options,  while  providing  support  for  children  with  autism  so  that  they  may  reach  their  full  potential.”  [McCain Statement on Combating Autism in America]

OBAMA ON VOTING RIGHTS FOR AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES

Obama  supports  fully  funding  the  Help  America  Vote  Act  (HAVA)  so  that  we  can  ensure  all  polling  places  are  accessible. His  administration  would  also  assure  better  enforcement  of  federal  disability  rights  laws  -  from  HAVA  to  the  Voting  Accessibility  for  the  Elderly  and  Handicapped  Act  to  the  ADA  -  to  make  sure  the  right  of  Americans  with  disabilities  to  vote  is  fully  protected.  [Obama Plan to Empower Individuals with Disabilities]

MCCAIN ON VOTING RIGHTS FOR AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES

In  2002,  McCain  voted  repeatedly  against  the  Help  America  Vote  Act, which  was  offered  to  correct  problems  in  the  election  system  and  impose  detailed  voting‐procedure  requirements  on  the  states.   McCain voted for final passage of the bill.   [S.565,  Senate  Vote  #39,  3/1/02;  S.565,  Senate  Vote  #Vote  40,  3/4/02;  H.R.3295,  Senate  Vote  #238,  10/16/02]

OBAMA ON VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES

The  Disabled  America  Veterans  (DAV)  gave  Obama  an  80%  rating  in  2006. [Project Vote Smart]

MCCAIN ON VETERANS WITH DISABILITIES

McCain  voted  with  the  Disabled  American  Veterans  20%  of  the  time. Factcheck.org  ”However,  he  is  correct  in  that  McCain  doesn’t  have  a  perfect  score  with  DAV  (Disabled  American  Veterans),  a  group  of  1.3  million  disabled  veterans  that  supports  more  funding  for  veterans  health  care.  McCain  has  a  20  percent  record  of  voting  the  way  DAV  would  like  him  to  in  2006…Senators  were  evaluated  on  five  votes  for  amendments  that  would  have  increased  funding  for  veterans’  health  care.”  [Factcheck.org]

i’m going back to school!

•October 24, 2008 • Leave a Comment

so it’s the end of a long & tiring week!  this week i finally took some initiative & decided that i am going to quit talking about going back to school & do it.  so all my paperwork is filled out & being processed. i am going to be studying the foundations of business. i always wanted to be a p.t. & thought that i may still pursue that since it could come in handy with tre & all.  but the more i thought about it the more i really wanted to do something different. i mean my life with tre is no picnic, it’s very stressful & difficult at times & do i really want to be working with all kinds of kids like this everyday all day & then come home to a severely disabled son as well?  not really.  i have decided i need to do something i am interested in but that is just for me.  something i can thrive in & that can take my mind off of all the difficult things that i have to deal with at home.  something that i can do & still come home & be a great mom & not be burnt out with working with special kids.

so it’s the beginning of a new adventure.  a new part of my life (our lives, really. my whole family) because i want to be able to help provide for us, while doing something that interests me & that can help us get our dream as well.

tre’s taos walker!

•October 24, 2008 • 1 Comment

so we picked up tre’s taos walker last wednesday…if you don’t know what this is there is a you-tube video about them.  they are really great & are designed especially to help kids with cp walk.  well anyway we picked it up on last wed. which was a long appt. so that they could get everything adjusted for him & everything. (thankyou! dr. vautrin! if you are in the dfw area i highly recommend synergy orthotics in plano, we see dr. vautrin & he is wonderful! he always gets us everything we need & his office is very on top of things!) well tre was very cranky when we were doing the adjustments, he hadn’t had a nap after school (big problem) & then he was in his afo’s for like 3hrs. straight (which he can handle but doesnt like especially when he can’t just move around & do his own thing. since he was being fitted to his orthotic we were like holding him down to get it all adjusted to the right lengths & everything) & then by the time we got him standing in it, he pretty much refused to take any steps at all! i felt bad for the dr. because he was like “yea, you know when you are ordering these things you expect to just put them in it & see them take off!” but of course it rarely happens like that! just like any equipment he needs to learn how to use it & get used to it & then i’m sure it will be very effective & wonderful.

so yesterday we took it to p.t. with us, & he did take some steps, mostly with his right foot, but that is progress…i cant wait to see him using it on his own! it will be so great for him to gain some independence!
